A Kitchen Renovation by Jaqui Seerman That Proves Outdated Wooden Paneling Can Be Attractive

When a consumer with two young children moved from Vermont and snapped up a cedar-paneled midcentury house in Los Angeles’s Fryman Canyon, designer Jaqui Seerman fell laborious for his or her type reference: Ralph Lauren within the ’90s. “I expanded on that layered equestrian aesthetic,” Seerman says, “incorporating brass particulars and a black-and-white flooring, which may be very traditional and a bit surprising.”

Her workforce stripped away the vestiges of a very moody ’80s kitchen rework: black vinyl cupboards, black granite, and darkish laminate flooring. Huge image home windows now brighten the room, spotlighting the unique wooden ceiling, the work of builder William Mellenthin and his son Michael. To take away layers of darkish paint from the beams, “We sandblasted and refinished all of it to make it mild and vivid and contemporary once more,” the designer says. Grass-green cabinetry vibrantly brings all of it all the way down to earth.

Although the householders aren’t big cooks, “They’re continuously consuming collectively as a household,” Seerman says. Two dishwashers, a central desk, and a floor-to-ceiling wall of pantry cupboards accommodate grazing. “When the youngsters are available in, they’re doing homework on the desk, they’re dropping backpacks, they’re having snacks. This kitchen is the backdrop to all of their dinners.”
